Sahara News N°38 - February 2000BB

For almost 15 years now the Atlantide Organisation Internationale team have been working enthusiastically for you to be able to participate in one of the most wonderful sporting adventures that exist. The event's renown is such that the tyre manufacturer Michelin have chosen the MARATHON DES SABLES as illustration for their European advertising campaign. As an organisation we're of course flattered but their choice is above all recognition of the sheer effort each competitor puts into the race.
It's difficult to convey what goes on in the MARATHON DES SABLES: the emotional aspect counting as much as the physical challenge. All long distance runners know just how much will power is needed to train well. Many also know the feeling of euphoria - even desire to burst out laughing - that running brings... but that's another story. It may be the magic of the desert, surpassing oneself, the sharing of a common objective, cutting off from daily life; there's no one explanation to be had. What we do know is that for many competitors there's a "before" and an "after" MARATHON DES SABLES.
With so much to relate some of you have often said there should be a book about it. You won't have long to wait. The book will be out just after the 15th edition and you'll be able to reserve a copy.
In the meantime, revise the basics, keep up the training without overdoing it and dream endlessly and sweetly of sand and starry skies.

See you very soon.

ANTI DOPING TESTS ATTENTION !!!
In line with International Athletics Federation (IAAF) norms, tests for doping will be carried out this year. As a result, each competitor taking medication will have to provide details of his/her treatment and the relevant prescription. For competitors registered with a national federation, the results will be transmitted to national and international authorities with possible sanctions if the candidate tests positive.
In the event of a competitor testing positive the MARATHON DES SABLES anti-doping commission will make all decisions ranging from warning to immediate disqualification according to the severity of the "products" found to have been used.
The fight against doping is of vital importance for everyone's well-being..

FROM BEST OF MOROCCO
With around 150 competitors from Scotland, England, Ireland and Wales, the 15th MDS will have its fair share of folks from over the Channel. True to form, a large number will be running for charitable causes. We can't possibly cite them all, but here are 3 we picked out.

BREAST CANCER CAMPAIGN
M. Howarth(GB), B. Eastwood (GB)and M.Graham (GB) are 3 women that not only love running but have considerable experience behind them. Teacher, secretary and dressmaker - they're joining forces in the name of the fight against cancer.

ROYAL ENGINEER LADIES
You can be young, attractive and be officers in the British Army T. Loyd (GB), K.Unsworth (GB) and K. Macphee (GB) will be there to show it. We already need little convincing...

DESERT BATS
Never say "can't" ! In accompanying J. Cythbertson (GB) who is blind, D. Lewis Scott (Scot), N. Dillon(GB) and R. Ainslie (GB) are determined to show everything's possible if you want it badly enough. James wants to encourage all those wishing to aim high despite a handicap.

ONLY JOKING !
When asked why they'll be running the MDS, they reply: R. 0'Callaghan (Irl): "Because, last year I bet a pound I would run again this year and a pound's a pound after all". D. Mc Carrick (GB): "To be the first pet rabbit to finish" Best marathon time: 6h10 ; "like a rabbit". H. Usher (GB): "To prove that barmen can go for a week without a drink". Best marathon time: 6h24 ; Hick !

FROM SPAIN
VIVA LA CERVEZA!

With three separate teams, the famous Spanish brewery will be well represented once again this year.
SAN MIGUEL. The team are all members of the personnel and public relations departments with B. Alegre Lopez, C.Diez de las Heras, J. Mario F. Vasquez, J. Aubeso Martinez, L. Polanco Alonso, J. Sanchez, L. Tablado Marcos, R.Peces Fernandez from Spain and N. Toste Dinis from Portugal.
SAN MIGUEL ESPECIAL. The battle between teams for first place will be a tough one: J. Fernandez Atienza, J. Corredor Arribas and J.Pallares Colomina are serious contenders. Though this will be Atienza's first MDS, he has a marathon time of 2h17. Jesus has taken 2nd place twice and José 11th in 1998.
SAN MIGUEL EXPORT. This team is sufficiently international to really merit its name. F. Osuna Gomez (SP) 5th in 97, 6th in 99 and 1st Veteran I, will be joining up with G. Dhiel (F) 5th in 98 and 4th in 99 and L. Ahansal (Mar) winner of 12th and 14th MDS. They're doubtless out to win.
