EDITO
Cinema screens are abound with wizards and ATLANTIDE ORGANISATION Internationale is dreaming in its turn of having a magic wand that would allow it to cast a few spells: like world peace for example.
In the meantime, AOI heartily wishes you all a very Happy New Year.
The New Year is very often an opportunity to make new resolutions, even change direction. So in this spirit AOI has decided to alter the direction of the next DESERT CUP in Jordan; it will begin in Petra. The itinerary and concept will not change, but the course will be simply be run the other way around.
In either Morocco or Jordan, many participants will be seeing their dream come true when they're lucky enough to behold places of such magnificent natural beauty. Each visitor therefore has a duty to preserve these landscapes and especially those who've put so much effort into finally discovering them. Just imagine the disappointment of crossing a desert covered in rubbish: it's enough to stop you from sullying the place.
With just over 600 competitors in the race, the MARATHON DES SABLES facilitates encounters as well as allowing for moments of solitude. Although participants set off altogether, within 2 or 3 kilometres the leaders break away and the peloton stretches out. From then on, competitors evolve alone or in small groups. It's only at the bivouac that the caravane reforms and abounds with tales of the "600" different races run and thousands of anecdotes of the day.
Before reaching that point, competitors and organisers still have a few things to

TIMING MARATHON DES SABLES

Switzerland/Luxembourg

The majority of the 25 competitors enrolled with our representative for Switzerland and Luxembourg Cédric GRANT are indeed from these two countries. Note that for the first time there's a 100% Luxembourg team.

SLEEPING BAG

Sleeping bags must be able to keep out the cold if necessary (allowing for possible low temperatures in April, drop in calorie intake, fatigue). Simple sheets or sleeping bag linings are not considered sufficient and will not be accepted by the organisation. The 1st night on the bivouac, before the technical controls on 2nd day, acts as a test night.

COMPASS

The MDS is not an orientation race since the route is marked out virtually all the way. However the crossings of large ergs are not. It is therefore preferable to learn how to read a compass. It's easy and after one or two attempts you'll manage it without difficulty.

FLIGHT TIMES (FROM PARIS)

Several flights are chartered for the 17th MDS. AOI does not yet know the times of these special flights. All competitors enrolled will be informed by post early March of their flight transfer times. You should however be prepared for an early departure on 05 April from Paris and an arrival at the end of the day in Paris on 15 April 2002.

EVERYBODY'S BUSINESS
It's inconceivable to see energy bar wrappings along the route on nature sport events. And yet too often it's the case. As we can never repeat the point often enough, please remember that the MDS race regulations hand out penalties to polluters (Art. 27 et 28).

A jolly good frame of mind
When asked why you take part in MDS? R. DUPREZ (F) replies "because an average runner can participate in an extraordinary race, and to do the sport I love in an environment I respect". Scarcely a better way of summing up the philosophy of the race...

Spain
Olivier SEPULCHRE is our new representative in Spain. He knows the race, having run it himself and followed it now for several years as part of our press team. His enthusiasm will enable Spanish runners to continue to shine on a course they're fond of.

TEAM ENROLMENTS

GIFI - Les Elles du Désert : a touch of folly and stacks of determination sums up the state of mind of this all-women team. Here for the fourth time, S. CADIERNO (F) is bringing along two friends I. DEFFEZ (F) and B. POTTIN (F).

Les grains de Luxembourg : when the wife accuses the husband of forcing her to participate in MDS, the husband is quick to insist she's the one forcing him. Whatever the case, S. and M. KAYSER (L) are doing their 3rd consecutive MDS. C. MALGRET (L) and G. WAGENER (L) will be at their sides. L. MARTIN (F) are delighted to be back to relive the team experience. They're taking up this new challenge along with C. COURTALON (F), J. MAUGENDRE (F), A. SOARES (F) and X. de VARINES.

To see Petra
The DESERT CUP 2002 Jordan Telecom will leave from Petra. This will enable all the runners to cross the site by day and discover its charms. Those wanting to visit the site can do so the day before; outside the technical and medical control period of course.

PRIZE-GIVING
All the DESERT CUP 2001 Jordan Telecom laureates received their awards in December, but the Jordanians still had to be recompensed. That's now been done. In the presence of Patrick BAUER, a ceremony was held in Amman on 13 January at the headquarters of Jordan Telecom. Naturally S. AQRA (2nd in general ranking) and the JORDAN TEAM 1 team (3rd team) were given a warm round of applause.

Petra/Wadi Rum
In leaving civilisation to gradually move into the desert, competitors will feel different sensations. For example everyone will be able to admire the unbelievable hills of the Rift Valley, and maybe in the distance the valley of Wadi Araba, as they'll be crossing this sector before nightfall.

The desert at night
For those arriving first, the nighttime course will coincide with entering Wadi Rum.
For the less rapid ones, they'll be advancing over two days and one night. Even if the luminous markers are easy to follow, moving through the desert at night always as a phantasmagoric feel to it.
