In terms of adventure sports,
the adventure aspect should never outweigh the sport.
If it does, participants and organisers could be in for
a bad surprise. Accomplishing a sporting feat in a hostile
environment gives heightened enough emotion in
itself without the race needing to be spiced up with any
kind of danger. ATLANTIDE ORGANISATION Internationale
is therefore doing everything it can to enable participants
to push their limits to the full in the safest possible
conditions.
Whatever the personal motivation, what counts most is
a similar determination to get to the end. All participants
are on an equal footing in this domain. That is why once
you1ve crossed the finish line, whether first or last,
there1s a shared sense of mutual respect that comes with
the awareness of having done more than just a race.
Amongst the services available during the race, the Internet
site darbaroud.com gives pride of place to the MARATHON
DES SABLES. The home page is entirely devoted to MDS and
all the information will be available in the form of a
newspaper front page. The daily press releases will be
in French and English and illustrated with around 15 photos
per day. The stage rankings will be provisional, as they
do not take into account possible penalties. Similarly,
if the rankings are not exhaustive, it does not mean all
those absent have automatically dropped out the race.
It may be they were still running at the moment the information
was sent by satellite. |
Just
one month before the race, it1s good to remember that
pacing oneself is the key to success. This begins with
the training and implies seriously slowing down eight
days before boarding the plane; some would happily run
during the flight if they were allowed.
See you soon

TIMING MARATHON DES SABLES
17th Edition
of the Marathon des Sables 05 to 15 Avril 2002 |
|
TELECOMMUNICATIONS
Don't forget to tell your families, friends and sponsors
that they're able to leave you messages on Internet
from 06 to 12 april.2002 :
http://www.darbaroud.com
under the special heading "email / competitors".
VERY IMPORTANT : After
12 april this service will no longer be available
for sending personal messages. Take note that only
messages with your name, first name and number will
be passed on to you. Do not try and send attachments
(for example photos). It cancels the message.
Other services on the bivouac : Telephone cards of
6 units are available at 40 euros each. One unit gives
you one minute of communication (telephone, fax) or
covers the sending of an email. Payment on site in
Euros, US$ or Dihrams, or by credit card: VISACARD
and MASTERCARD only.
ANTI DOPING
TEST
The fight against
doping is of vital importance for everyone's well-being.
In line with International Athletics Federation (IAAF)
norms, tests for doping will be carried out this year.
As a result, each competitor taking medication will
have to provide details of his/her treatment and the
relevant prescription. For competitors registered
with a national federation, the results will be transmitted
to national and international authorities with possible
sanctions if the candidate tests positive.
In the event of a competitor testing positive the
MARATHON DES SABLES anti-doping commission will make
all decisions ranging from warning to immediate disqualification
according to the severity of the "products"
found to have been used.
CHEESE ! ! ! !

| Once again Robert
MOLEDA (F) will be with us 06 to 13 April to capture
your finest moments on film. Working exclusively
for the competitors, he'll be taking photos of
every participant. You'll receive an order form
and the photos early May. Remember to keep your
numbers and sponsors' logos clearly on show. |
MEDICAL FILE
The obligatory medical
certificate and electrocardiogram must be dated the
month of March.
Imperative: the medical certificate to be completed
is the one in the registration file sent by AOI. Remember
that failure to bring both documents on 06 april to
Morocco will prevent you from beginning the race.
DOC TROTTER
 |
Specialists in supplying
medical assistance on hostile terrain, the DOC
TROTTER team, consisting of 30 doctors and nurses,
will look after the health of the participants.
They are no stranger to blisters and all the other
aches and pains familiar to runners and they should
be consulted as quickly as possible to avoid any
injuries becoming more serious. |

MARATHON
DES SABLES
A few words of wisdom
After victory in the 15th MDS and the 1st DESERT CUP
2000 Jordan Telecom, Pascale Martin (F) is ready to
give advice to all those who'd like some handy tips
for this kind of endurance test. You can contact her
through her internet site and she will be delighted
to reply to any queries.
PascaleMDS@aol.com
Team entries
Team Rafael : F. QUAGLINO (I) and F. HARDOUIN
MONROY (I) have done several MDS. This time they1re
back with a student from Turin N. ROVEA who1s out to
discover the desert.
M&P Risk Agency : With 21 participations
between them, they've probably taken part in more MDS
then any other team. They are P. ZUBANI (I) our rep
in Italy, T. MASTRANGELO (I) and M. OLMO (I) twice winner
of the Desert Cup and 3 times present on the MDS podium.
Team Database : G.R. FUMAGALLI (I), P. PIROTTA
(I) and R. VALERIO (I) are coming to push their limits
to the full. They'll certainly have the opportunity
to do that.
Slashers : P. TUCHER, G. ROBINSON, C. HOWEY and
R. GUEST from the British armed forces get as much pleasure
from running as they do raising money for equipment
for a children1s hospital.
2 LI : 4 more English soldiers defending a similarly
good cause. W. COOK, R.P. SMITH, Y. HADOUN and N. QRASHI
are running for blind children.
Bean Feasters : One of these 3 Scottish soldiers'
sons is autistic. It's a good reason for K.Mc KENZIE
and D. and C McCUSKER to be particularly motivated to
raise funds for all those who are in the same situation.
Scots Guards : Soldiers S. ROWE (SC), C. HUTTON
(GB), B. CANNON (GB) and R. BASSET CROSS (GB) count
on doing their prestigious regiment proud in this most
pacifist of combats.
Save the Rhino : In pure British tradition, these
9 competitors will be taking it in turns to wear a magnificent
rhinoceros costume. They've participated in many races
throughout the world over the last 10 years and bank
on crossing the finish line. Bravo to Brits N. BAKER,
S. BENTINCK, R. DEVEREUX, D. HEATH, B. HEMMINGS, C.
RAWES, G. STEPHENSON and D. STIRLING and the Italo-American
C. FRANCO GRAHAM
Tips from Karim MOSTA (F)
Backpack : 800g with side and waist pockets. Beware
of seams which may cut into your back. 1 T-shirt for
running and 1 long sleeved for the evening (light but
warm). Shoes: 1 1/2 to 2 sizes too large. Gaiters :
old lycratights stitched onto your socks and attached
with velcro. Keep necessarymaterial separate in a see-through
plastic bag and anti-snake bite within easy reach. To
keep on top form: do stretching, keep hydrated, take
a walk around the camp to talk with the others and cheer
on friends at arrival, meals in the evening around a
fire.
Keeping the desert clean
To achieve a level of zero pollution, AOI will be using
an incinerator van to destroy waste. It is equipped
with a fully auto-combustive furnace (practically smokeless),
capable of destroying organic matter as well as plastic
and light metal.
A small
gesture
There's nothing worse than a camp strewn with hundreds
of pieces of toilet paper. In order to combat this unpleasant
sight, AOI will install portable toilet cabins for competitors
over the first two days. Afterwards, for those who prefer
the great outdoors to our tent toilets, AOI will provide
biodegradable bags where used paper can be stored and
later transferred to special containers. This only requires
the minimum of effort and will prevent spoiling the
area.
DESERT CUP
DESERT CUP 2002 Jordan Telecom
Telephone company Jordan Telecom will be associating
its name with the DESERT CUP for the 3rd consecutive
year. The company is very supportive of the event itself,
and also backs Jordanian runners in teams where several
members of its staff have taken up the DESERT CUP challenge. |
