Everyone
agrees that the 17th MARATHON DES SABLES was a truly great
edition. The route wasn't the easiest and the runners
had to face exceptionally tough weather conditions. The
combination of head-on winds, sandstorms, the cold and
rain, plus high temperatures at the end, all took a toll
on the body.
Yet there were fewer retirements than ever before. And
when you consider the record amount of sand, you wonder
just what it takes to stop the will to succeed...
AOI invites lovers of adventure sports to come together
each year in the Southern Moroccan desert precisely to
encourage such performances. Note that he 18th edition
has definitely been fixed for 04 to 14 April 2003.
In the meantime, there's the DESERT CUP 2002 Jordan telecom
from 03 to 09 November. As announced, the course will
be run from Petra to Wadi Rum. This change of direction
will modify the way the course has to be paced. You will
therefore have to be careful not to tire yourselves out
ascending the first kilometres and make sure you have
energy in reserve to confront the desert sands. Crossing
the finish line without mishaps will require a bit of
wisdom or that you be sure of your strengths. The Red
Sea shores will then provide a welcome opportunity for
everyone to recuperate: swimming or admiring the sea-beds
on glass-bottomed boats.
To ensure participation in the DESERT CUP, you're advised
to make your reservation before 10/07/2002. Later, providing
you contact us before 10/09/2002 and have a complete reservation
file, it will all depend on available places...
Good luck with your training and we'll be in touch soon

TIMING DESERT CUP
Prochaine
Edition du 3 au 9 novembre 2002 |

OBJECTIVE
In order to establish competitors' calorie needs, the race regulations
provide a table with 4 objectives (see article 23 and the objective
form to be filled in). You should judge your potential performance
well, since overrunning your time carries a 1-hour penalty.
TEAM RACING
No team can be enrolled once in Jordan. The exact name of the team
and its members must be indicated at the time of sending in the
reservation file.
WALKERS WELCOME
To finish the course, you have to have a clear idea of your ability
and then pace your efforts in relation to the difficulties presented.
With 62 hours to complete the 168 km, it means you can progress
at an average of less than 3km/h ... It's altogether feasible for
a walker.
TEAM MEMBER WANTED
Thanks to the Forum on the darbaroud.com web site, competitors can
contact each other to set up teams. For those that do not have access
to internet, giving AOI a ring can sometimes work wonders.

REGISTRATION
The closing date for reservations is 10 July. After
this date, contact your AOI representative to find out
if there are any remaining places.
RENDEZ-VOUS
A press conference is scheduled in AMMAN for 27 July
at the Intercontinental hotel. In the company of the
Jordanian Minister for Tourism and Antiquities, the
French Ambassador for Jordan and representatives of
generous sponsors, Patrick Bauer will present the forthcoming
race plus the film on the DESERT CUP 2001 Jordan telecom.
WHO WANTS IT?
Without being superstitious, some people prefer to get
as much luck as possible on their side. Choosing to
be N°13 is part of this sort of approach. First
come first served; it's as simple as that.
RUNNING IN TEAMS
Being necessarily mixed men/women, the course in teams
of three is a race within a race. To decide to run in
teams is to multiply the suspense by three, since so
long as every team member has not finished, there's
still everything to play for...
GOOD TO KNOW
Just a reminder: the 230 competitors representing 30
countries in November 2001 were able to see both how
welcoming the Jordanians are and how wonderful their
country is. The Ministry for Culture and Antiquities
is now happy to announce an increase in the number of
foreign visitors. The French Ambassador to Jordan confirms
that the situation is peaceful and wishes to make this
clearly known.
CANCELLATION INSURANCE
Anyone can have a last minute problem. For cancellations
made during the last few months, AOI operates a sliding
scale of refunds (Art. 25 of race
regulations). Nevertheless, to avoid all unpleasantness,
you are strongly advised to take out cancellation insurance
(Coris assistance, ...)

SPECIAL 17th EDITION
WATER
!
The torrential rains that fell two days before the race
meant competitors crossed several oueds which for once
were not dried out. On the edges of lake Iriqui there
was even a river flowing at the foot of the dunes. 10
times more rain fell in one day than over the year:
76mm/m2.
AN EXAMPLE TO FOLLOW
Encouraged by MDS-lover Michel BACH (F), the company
GIFI has generously contributed to the renovation of
2 photovoltaique pumps installed during previous editions
of MDS. Four panels were replaced on the oued NAM pump,
near bivouac n°4 of the 2002 edition, and on the
MFISS pump installed on the 2001 route, the electrics
and converter were changed. We can only applaud such
initiatives which allow nomadic populations to benefit
from water, both for themselves and their animals, without
having to draw it from wells bucket by bucket.
THE BAKER'S DAUGHTER
Following in the footsteps of her dad Jean-Luc, who
was running his 5th MDS, Mathilde GAUVRIT (F) finished
this 17th edition brilliantly. It's a genuine feat for
someone aged only 16 and rightly rewarded by a special
trophy honouring the youngest competitor in the race.
THE GREEN LIGHT
Thanks to the technical skills of SSF, competitors were
guided from CP3 to CP5 at night by a laser beam; in
other words over more than 23 km as they crossed the
great erg. Despite the sandstorm it enabled many runners
to keep on the right course.
SAFETY
Sincere congratulations to the helicopter pilot who
relentlessly took to the air during the sandstorm. Between
trips ensuring medical assistance or transporting water,
he continued to make surveillance trips over the dunes
and put straying competitors back on course. Bravo Monsieur
Eddy!
FROM HEAD TO TOES
The doctors and nurses of the DOC TROTTER medical team
have long been appreciated for tending so well to the
runner's feet. This year, violent sandstorms meant they
had to open a post to wash competitors' and organisers'
eyes. Their little low-pressure cleaner worked wonders. |
