SAHARA NEWS - Octobre 2002
N° 60
O
EDITO

There's nothing better than pushing back the limits you thought you had, because frankly the greatest battles are those you win over yourself. Lovers of sport and long-distance runners in particular know this feeling only too well. Repeated training sessions can be tough and you certainly don't always feel like getting up and leaving the house, but every time you resist that lazy tendency, you come back euphoric.
On a race like the DESERT CUP Jordan Telecom, each extra step takes you nearer to getting this sense of satisfaction. And surpassing your limits is much more than just physical: it's not that rare to see a struggling competitor nevertheless find the necessary energy to help boost the morale of a fellow runner on the verge of dropping out the race. You see your fellow companion not as an adversary but an equal who's suffering.
You end up respecting the person all the more because you know only too well the value of his/her efforts. In short it means that in discovering yourself you discover others and from those enriching encounters comes tolerance, understanding and fraternity. In a few days' time, participants in the DESERT CUP 2002 Jordan Telecom, will be taking up one real challenge.
From wherever they come and whatever is driving them, you have to recognise and praise their
determination. For those of you concerned, this Sahara News contains important practical information to help you enjoy the adventure to the full.
Concerning the 18th edition of the MARATHON DES SABLES, there's already a high level of enthusiasm, not to say passion, for the race. Whilst some will be celebrating their 16th participation, others say they'll finally be realising a dream they've had for a few years now. Walkers or runners, women or men, individuals or teams, people are anxious to enrol from all continents.
In both races, people from all walks of life and with all imaginable differences come together and cohabit in perfect peace. So why shouldn't we hope of serving as an example for the rest of the world....
Good luck with the training and we'll be in touch soon.
AOI.

TIMING DESERT CUP

THROUGH RESPECT FOR OUR SPONSORS

During your stay in Jordan, promoting races held outside of France through the distribution of brochures or other means of communication is strictly forbidden. Any such competitors will be penalised (See ART. 9).

DISTRESS FLARES
Since there are no orientation problems up to CP9 and in order not to unnecessarily encumber competitors, it has been decided to hand out distress flares only once CP9 is reached (Km 109).

EQUALITY OF TREATMENT
Since everyone should be competing in the same running conditions, all competitors are required to be at the bivouac for dinner and to sleep on Monday 4 November, failing which they will be disqualified.

TRANSFER
As the race does not begin from the bivouac itself, a short bus transfer will be organised at 07H30. You must therefore be ready a little before in order not to hold up the start of the race scheduled at 8h30.

DESERT BREEZE

Desert Cup

NO PHOTOGRAPHER
There will not be a special "competitors' photographer" on the DESERT CUP . Photo-lovers should therefore bring along their own cameras.

MOBILE
Portable phones function in many places during the race. Ask your provider for international coverage and remember to come with charged batteries as it will impossible to recharge them on the race route.

4 CONTINENTS
20 nationalities will be present for the start of the DESERT CUP 2002 Jordan Telecom : Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Denmark; France, Germany, Great-Britain (England and Wales), Hungary, India, Ireland, Iraq, Italy, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Spain, Switzerland, The Netherlands, USA. .

TEAM RACING
Los Esberits : J.P POIDEVIN (F) and M. GOYARD (F) have already done it in one direction and are curious to see what it'll be like the other way around. After a good MDS, teammate Elisabeth MARQUE (F) feels like a new
challenge.

Team DAR : This Danish team are experienced in adventure races. M. GRANUEN and Danna CORKE will be encountering the desert for the first time whilst S.L. SOERENSEN took part in last year's Jordan race.
Eurosport : C. GINTER (F) and F. CRESCI (F) have 30 MDS between them. As for the Desert Cup, they've got used to being up at the front. Teammate Sylvie CADIERNO (F), with several MDS under her belt, also has the ability to do well.
VSD : Marielle COUDER PERRET (F) is joining a solid team. After a super 5th place on the 17th MDS, D. NUGRE (F) could well create a few surprises and as for S. RAUX (F), his experience in adventure races and trails should allow him to finish well.
Soja Sun : Under the same name, P. RENAULT (F) and D. LE MAUFF (F) were members of the winning team in 2001. This time they'll be backed up by Sylvie SENEGAS (F), a fan of long distance running.
Jordan Team 1 : S. AL AQRA (2nd last year), M. AL SWITTI (11th in 2001) and Lama HATTAB (9th woman last year) are in with a chance of winning. 3rd team last year, they're clearly out to do even better.
Jordan Team 2 : Twin sister of Lama, Dima HATTAB (JRD) will be joining O. FAURE (F) and H. AZAWI (IRAQ). They're running for peace throughout the world and particularly in the Middle East.
Jordan Team 3 : Miss Rawan MUSA (JRD) is the youngest competitor in the race. Along with A. AL DAISAT (JRD) they both finished the race in 2001 and will be joined this year by A. SABBAH (JRD).
3D : Laira CAMPELLO is the female member of this Brazilian team from Sao Paulo. She's joined by V. MICELI et R.VALLS MARTIN

Marathon des Sables

WATER FOR THE DESERT
For the sixth time, Gilles Flamant (F) is inviting competitors on the MARATHON DES SABLES to help raise funds to buy a solar pump. Capable of pumping around 20m3/day, these wells meet the needs of around 3,000 people and their livestock.
SUPPORT THE PROJECT BY BUYING CUBIC METRES OF SOLAR WATER
Each m3 costs a symbolic 2 Euros meaning everyone can afford to participate in this project. In conjunction with AOI and the Moroccan Regional Water Board, the pump will be installed close to the next MDS route.
For further information on how to participate in the operation: check the web-site http://bleu-sable.imp.cnrs.fr

ITINERARY
The MDS race route changes each year and is held secret until the competitors arrive in Morocco. The organisers strive to mix stunning scenery and challenging terrain, always keeping in mind the safety of participants.

From now on, surfers can find the route map, road book and list of competitors on the site. From 05 to 07 November, press reviews, interviews and photos will enable you to follow the course. Considering the characteristics inherent in a non-stop race, there will be no telephone, fax and email service for competitors.
It is therefore pointless sending EMAILS which have no chance of reaching their destinations.
"Provisional" rankings of the first 10 runners from 06 November. "Provisional" final rankings from 07 November.
When the race is finished, photos and press cuttings will be put onto the site as and when they are published.
