| DESERT CUP |

THE CONCEPT
The DESERT CUP is a free style, non-stop foot race with food self
sufficiency. You can participate individually or in teams of
a minimum of 3 persons. Competitors choose a time objective obliging
them to carry a certain amount of food depending on how long
they plan to spend in the race. Maximum authorised time is 60
hours for a distance of around 160km. Providing you reach the
check-points before the cut-off points, it is possible to have
two 5-hour rest periods and still finish the course going at
an average speed of 3.5km/h.
THE ROUTE
Patrick Bauer has returned to Mali to trace the future itinerary
of the DESERT CUP. The overall distance is a bit shorter and
the section crossing the Savannah is much shorter compared to
the 1st edition. On the other hand, the course will cross a larger
part of BANDIAGARA escarpment.
So to sum up: shorter, less savannah and more slope factor.
THE PARTY
No question of doing anything in Africa, especially in Mali, without
music. So there’ll be some musical entertainment en route,
and don’t be surprised by a party atmosphere in the villages
we go through.
A BIT OF GEOGRAPHY
Mali is south of Algeria, twice the size of France and half of
it is in the Sahara. Situated on the edges of the Niger river,
the famous town of Tombouctou marks the end of the desert. The
Bandiagara escarpment begins 200km to the South, with savannah
to the East and the Niger river 40km to the West. The Dogon people
live on this escarpment, having took refuge there more than 1,000
years ago.
MEMORIES OF MALI
During the first edition of the race in Mali, the runners were
surprised both by the difficulty of the itinerary and how beautiful
the landscapes were. But above all it was the enthusiastic welcome
of the Malian people that really left its mark. The friendliness,
the songs, the encouragement, the dancers on stilts, the masks,
hunters in traditional costume, children laughing and taking
your hand to join you a stretch of the way, men and women working
hard but who always took the time to greet you. So many unforgettable
moments!.
NON STOP
A non-stop race above all needs constant pacing, whether it’s
effort, water, food or rest. Over such a distance, there are always
moments that drag. You have to listen to your body and never lose
heart because your energy can pick up just as quickly as it faded.

WOMEN
It’s a bit obvious to note that women generally manage their
course better than men. You just have to look at them to realise.
They remain dignified even when the going gets tough and while men
are screwing up their faces in pain wanting to surpass themselves
at all costs, the women keep something back so they can still summon
up the energy to smile. And yet the fight for the top places in the
rankings is anything but easy…
TEAMS
It’s a real competition where every minute is hard earned.
With four teams at less than an hour apart, this year’s rankings
had never been so close, and the level of team-members so high.
Having said that, it’s by no means running to win that’s
the sole motivation. Solidarity is a virtue in itself and the pleasure
of running with friends and meeting up in the evening on the bivouac
is a fabulous experience.
PULLING OUT
This year we saw the highest number of retirements ever registered
on MDS: nearly double the previous record (up from 80 to 146).
However, with 731 at the start, it’s still only 20%. Pulling
out is part of sporting life, but the experience can be beneficial
if you’re able to draw some lessons from it. You can blame
the weather, the organisation, your rivals, your shoes, an injury
or heaven knows what else, but at the end of the day there’s
always a personal error in there somewhere… and something
to be avoided next time.
A CONCERT IN THE MIDST OF THE DESERT
12 musicians from the Opera de Paris accompanied the renowned Egyptian
opera singer Amira SELIM in a wonderful classical music recital
at the end of the marathon stage. Everyone was enchanted by the
purity of her interpretation. Many thanks to all the musicians
for lifting us to such emotional heights, and to conductor Jérôme
PILLMENT who has a real talent for bringing classical music alive.
A
SUCCESSFUL PROJECT
By deciding to finance the whole solar installation for El Maharch
pass, the company GTR has allowed hundreds of people access to
water that they previously had to carry bucket by bucket. From
now on, many families will find it a good deal easier to water
their herds of dromedaries or transport jerri cans on donkey-back.
We have to thank EAUSOLEIL association who dealt with the installation
and the company LORANS who provided all the plumbing.
A PROJECT IN
DEVELOPMENT
As Patrick BAUER announced during the prize-giving ceremony, an
orphanage will soon be built in Ouarzazate. The Province of Ouarzazate
is donating the land and generous donors are financing the construction.
The charity PORTE DES SABLES has already raised part of the funding
thanks to KIA Motors (10,000 Euros) (partner on MARATHON DES
SABLES) but also via the involvement of MDS since CIMBALY is
financing 10% of the project. |
