EDITO
It’s thought the Earth dates from around 4.6 billion years ago.
Suppose we transposed this on a 24H clock, the human race would appear in the last minute and modern man in the last few seconds. In this short lapse of time, man has undeniably proven to be of superior intelligence. Our faculties of analysis and creativity have made us the most evolved species on the planet. It took less than 2000 years for a few savants (from Aristotle to Newton) to show us all (or nearly all) how evident certain natural laws were. We now know the Earth is not flat and everything does not turn around it, no more than around the sun.
As a way of situating ourselves in the cosmos, we know for example that it took 240 million years for our solar system to go round our own galaxy and that there are billions of other galaxies besides the Milky Way. To sum up, whether it’s in space or time, the place and size of man seem to be miniscule.
And yet, in the space of 200 years, we’ve managed to use up all the fossil energy reserves on the planet and contribute to the fastest-ever recorded global warming. Not a day goes by without information announcing the most catastrophic predictions for the next 50 years.
It’s alarming news and the risks are real, but there’s no question of giving up. All is not lost. We simply have to change our habits quickly and reduce our energy consumption as much as possible. We can trust our wonderful survival instincts and the genius of Stone descendants of Cro-Magnon to adapt and find solutions.
It’s altogether feasible and runners on MARATHON DES SABLES prove it. For more than 20 years, thousands of them have been confronted with this kind of problem. Every edition they have to be ingenious in finding the right equipment and carrying as little weight as possible. They have to adapt their energy consumption and not run out of reserves. As for water, managing it becomes an absolute priority.

We hope every individual will become aware of the chance he/she has to live on such a fantastic little planet and do everything possible to preserve its resources and beauty.

See you soon

EMAIL-Tel-Fax
COnce again this year, AOI offers you the chance to send emails free of charge to a correspondent of your choice. Around 10 computers will be made available at the “email concurrents/competitors’ email” area.
Please be patient when waiting for your turn. You can send a second email for free, but will have to begin the queue again.

Due to increasingly draconian anti spam procedures, you can send your message to only ONE address. You should therefore determine with your correspondent the group of people you wish to forward your message to, before leaving for Morocco.

Note : messages are sent via satellite so computers are not on line. Emails are sent at the end of the day. You cannot send attachments.

Other services on the bivouac: telephone and fax : 4 euros per minute.
Communication (email, fax, telephone) is made by satellite only.

Remember to tell your family, friends and sponsors that they can leave you messages during the MARATHON DES SABLES, but only from 24 to 30 March 2007. Go to the website and follow the instructions.

http://www.darbaroud.com
section "écrire aux concurrents/write to competitors"
After 30 MARCH, this email service will no longer be operational.
Only messages with surname, first name and race ID number will be transferred.
Do not send attachments (e.g. photos). This will cancel the message. Messages will be given to competitors on the bivouac every day.
Note: AOI cannot transfer messages posted on the FORUM.
MEDICAL CERTIFICATE
AND ELECTROCARDIOGRAM

Some competitors have already sent AOI one or both of these documents. The organisation cannot register them. You will therefore have to undergo another medical visit and ECG if you have made this mistake. The documents MUST be dated between 22 February and 23 March 2007. Each competitor must present the documents on 08 April in Morocco, failing which you may be refused entry to the race. The ECG is also compulsory.
N.B.: the medical certificate to be validated by a doctor (signature and stamp) is the one in the registration file sent by AOI.
MEDICAL
DOCTROTTER are specialists in providing medical aid in extreme conditions. This year’s team of 40 doctors and nurses will monitor competitors’ state of health.
They’re accustomed to blisters and the rest so don’t hesitate to consult them to stop an irritation becoming a serious problem.

REGULAR TREATMENT
Every competitor must possess the treatment he/she needs to ensure daily wellbeing. Aspirin, anti-sickness tablets, adhesive tape, plasters for blisters and medicine (such as Imodium) are the strict minimum. No vitamin supplements will be given without a penalty.

COMPASSES
Even if MDS is not an orientation course as the route is marked out virtually all the way, your compass must be sufficiently precise to allow you to take your bearings. When crossing the ergs (dune zones) where it is very difficult to mark out straight lines, you’ll find it easier to take your bearings than look for the markers.

SLEEPING BAG
Sleeping bags must be good enough to protect from the cold (temperatures can be low in March, low calorie intake, fatigue). Simple sheets and oversheets are not considered sufficient and are not accepted by the organisation.

THE KNIFE
To save weight, some competitors try and find the smallest knife possible.
We’ve seen a few cases of disposable plastic knives with shortened handles …
That’s just not on! The knife is part of the survival equipment and must be capable of serving its purpose. It must therefore have a metal blade, if not penalties will apply (Art. 24 and 28)..

IDENTIFICATION MARKS & RACE NUMBERS
Race stewards will be strict concerning the position and visibility of your race numbers. The breast-plate (20 x 24cm) is worn on the chest not nder the stomach (art. 8 and 9). Your number plate must not be folded, or covered by straps (they must go underneath).
Be careful ! failing to respect the positioning of race numbers can lead to disqualification from the race. (Art. 27 and 28).
Start thinking about where you should put your sponsorship logos on your t-shirt and back-pack. You have the collar, the stomach, sleeves, cap, shorts, back-pack etc.

FOOD
Competitors must be able to show 2,000 calories per remaining day of the course in order to satisfy their calorie needs. This means having 14,000 K/cal on the technical checks day of 24 march (see ART 24, 27 and 28 plus the table on page 7 and 16 of the race regulations).

PREPARE YOUR FEET WELL
Besides training and tanning your feet a month before the start of the race (henna, lemon, “Tannopat” cream for dogs) here are a few words of advice you’d do well to follow
1. Never wear new socks and above all never brand-new shoes.
2. Shoes should be 1.5 to 2 sizes bigger than normal shoe-size.
3. Cut nails 8 days before, if possible by a chiropodist.
4. Protect friction areas.
5. Remove sand regularly from shoes and socks and take time to dry your feet
6. Don’t hesitate to stop and treat a blister.

SALT
Vital for fighting dehydration, the quantity of salt necessary for each individual varies according to length of effort, food intake, acclimatisation faculties and quantity of urine.
AOI provides 4g of salt per day (8 x 0.5 g) to allow you to satisfy daily needs in normal conditions. In the event of exceptional weather conditions, the doctors will adapt and personalise an extra dose.

WATER MANAGEMENT
Water rations are limited on MDS. It’s therefore crucial to manage your water intake well. It begins on the eve of the race because you should start thinking of hydrating yourself fully before the course. Afterwards you must read the road book carefully and calculate your needs in relation to the variable quantities distributed at check-points.
Above all it’s better to carry a bit of extra water than to run out: precious advice that’s too often ignored.

IDENTITY DOCUMENTS
To get race number during the technical checks on 24 March in Morocco, competitors must show an identity document. This document must be easily accessible so as not to block the queue.

WEIGHT OF BAG AND SURVIVAL KIT
Compulsory equipment must weigh overall 6.5kg minimum and 15kg maximum, survival kit included. Competitors are provided with distress flares weighing 360g. Add to that 14g of salt. The flare must remain accessible at all times (not at the bottom of your bag). As for salt, 4g per day including 2g taken in the evening will help you keep your hydric mass.

BEWARE OF PENALTIES !
You must read the race regulations carefully. Too many competitors skip through them or think they already know them. Every year, penalties are regularly handed out for badly-positioned race numbers and delays in reaching the start in the morning. (ART. 8, 9, 13 and 16).

CHOICE OF HOTELS
No hotel in Ouarzazate is big enough to accommodate all MDS competitors.
Groups are often organised by nationality for those enrolled with AOI’s representatives. This makes it easier to transfer competitors by bus to the airport to get flights home. In fact some have to get up at 4 a.m. for the transfer. For the last few years our English representative The Best Of Morocco has decided to take care of hotel accommodation after the race for its British competitors. These people are no longer AOI’s responsibility once back in Ouarzazate.

BUS JOURNEY BACK TO OUARZAZATE
Every year a few runners are met by friends and family at the final finish line and decide to return to Ouarzazate using their own means of transport. In such cases they are no longer covered by the organisation’s insurance and AOI therefore accepts no responsibility in the event of an accident.

HOTEL ACCOMMODATION
On return to Ouarzazate all competitors are in double rooms. The hotel forms, included in the road book, allow you to choose the person with whom you will share a room. For reservation and insurance reasons, only competitors can be accommodated for these two nights. Competitors wishing to share rooms with their families must make their own arrangements.

HUMANITARIAN AID
For the last 15 years, AOI along with many donors, has coordinated the installation of around ten photovoltaic pumping stations for isolated villages or nomadic people, in addition to the construction and renovation of school buildings with toilets and solar-powered showers.
For 2007, AOI is backing a new project : the creation of a cooperative in a small village in southern Morocco, along with the charities EAUSOLEIL and DROIT AU COEUR.
Aim : transmit elders’ knowledge of weaving, pottery and other techniques, create a workshop for craftspeople, a creche, a shop.

ANTI-DOPING CONTROLS

Anti-doping controls will be carried out through the FFA according to International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF) norms. As a result, competitors on medication must be able to show their medical file relating to this treatment plus the prescription. For competitors registered with a national federation, the results will be communicated to national and international instances with possible sanctions if the results prove positive.
The anti-doping commission on the MARATHON DES SABLES will take all decisions in the event of a positive result ranging from warning to disqualification, according to the seriousness of the “products” used.

OPERATION KEEP THE DESERT CLEAN
Through respect for the environment, all bottles will be numbered and penalties handed out to runners whose bottles are found on the race route, between the start of each day’s stage, the check-points and the finish line (ART.27 et 28)
In addition, the MARATHON DES SABLES will once more be using an incinerator lorry. The lorry is designed to destroy all the rubbish created by the marathon runners. Its autocombustion oven is capable of burning organic matter but also plastic and light metals.
